Roots ‘n Blues ‘n BBQ – How to Festival

It’s finally time!

This Friday and Saturday, downtown Columbia will be transformed as the Roots ‘n Blues ‘n BBQ Festival takes over! Whether it’s your first time at the festival or you’ve been coming since the beginning, Roots ‘n Blues has something new to offer each year. Here’s a few things to not miss at this year’s festival…

1. Take a stroll through BBQ village, where competitors set up early and stay up late. The smell alone is reason enough to check out these festive folks.

2. Were you at the True/False Film Festival this year? Did you love ‘Searching for Sugarman?’ Then don’t miss your chance to see Rodriguez live at Roots ‘n Blues! He’ll be performance on the MO Lottery Stage at Peace Park Friday evening.

3. Take the time to look down as you wander the festival. This year, festival organizers partnered with local artists to create stunning storm drain art to raise awareness for what litter does to our water system.

4. Singing for a Cause. As a park of the Blues in the Schools program, a resident artist visits local schools to teach them the importance of music each year. This year, TJ Wheeler will be performing with those very students at the free stage in Flat Branch Park on Saturday morning.

5. Give a Cheer. Have a few spare minutes Saturday morning? Head down to Flat Branch Park to cheer on the racers as they finish their 10K and Half Marathon. Sure they’ve gotten to experience a beautiful course, listen to music and get free barbeque, but they’ve also been running. Who knows, maybe they’ll share their BBQ with you.

6. Al Green. Enough said.

A few last things:

-Tickets are still available here, so get them now!

-Also, downtown Columbia is extremely easy to navigate, but here’s a festival map.

-You can also use your smartphone to get around the festival this weekend. Just search ‘Roots N Blues’ on your iPhone or Android device.

Every fall, thousands of music and barbeque fans gather in Columbia to attend the Roots ‘n Blues ‘n BBQ Festival. The two-day festival begins on a Friday night and concludes on Saturday, but there’s a part of the festival that not everyone sees. While concert goers sleep in and the BBQ teams tend to their smokers, hundreds of attendees wake up at the crack of dawn to run the Roots ‘n Blues Half Marathon/10K race.

This popular race grows each year as runners appreciate the beautiful routes through Columbia, the musical acts along the route and, of course, the BBQ and beer at the end! Both the 10k and Half Marathon routes combine roads and trails through scenic Columbia on a fall morning. In addition to the race experience, your registration fee also includes a free ticket to the festival for the day of the race…not a bad way to celebrate finishing!

So, whether you’re a seasoned runner or someone looking to complete their first race, there’s nothing like the festive atmosphere of Roots ‘n Blues to give you a fantastic experience. So get registered today and we’ll be cheering for you at the finish line!
