‘Cool’ Summer Eats in Columbia!

July 11, 2013

If you get a little overheated during your summer visit to Columbia, be sure to hit these ‘cool’ spots and get yourself a treat!

63 Diner

5801 Hwy 763 North | 573-443-2331

Step back in time at the 63 Diner! A classic diner featuring music from the 50’s and nostalgic décor – the waitresses even wear poodle skirts! Order one of many signature diner-style meals, and don’t forget the milkshake!

Main Squeeze Natural Foods Cafe

28 S. 9th St. | 573-817-5616

While Main Squeeze does feature a vegetarian menu, it’s not just for vegetarians! Stop by and try one of their unique fresh juice drinks or smoothies, like the Ginger Tonic (apple, celery, lemon, and ginger) or the Berry Berry Good smoothie (grape, blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry).

Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream

21 S. 9th St. | 573-443-7400

sparkysicecream-compressed

A small ice cream parlor in The District (downtown Columbia), Sparky’s features awesomely unique rotating flavors including mango strawberry almond, chocolate banana Tabasco, dark and stormy (for those 21 and older, it includes rum and ginger beer), blackberry goat cheese, and dark pepper dark chocolate espresso. Don’t worry, for those of you who would prefer a safer choice, Sparky’s also has “normal” flavors like vanilla bean, chocolate, cookies and cream, and butter pecan.

Tropical Liqueurs

515 E. Broadway | 573-442-8098

3805 S. Providence | 573-256-7141

A bar specializing in frozen cocktails, Trops is the place to be (as long as you’re 21)! There are 2 locations in Columbia: one on the south side of town and one downtown in the District. While Trops does serve beer and mixed drinks, they are known for their frozen drinks such as the Tiger Paw (peach schnapps, rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice), ’57 Chevy (rum, gin, vodka, sloe gin, and mai tai blend), and many others.

Buck’s Ice Cream

Eckles Hall, University of Missouri | 573-882-1088

Buck’s is known as the official ice cream of the Mizzou Tigers and is even made fresh on the University of Missouri’s campus by food science students. Their typical hours are Monday – Friday noon-5 (and Saturdays during warmer months), but it’s completely worth it to find time to go just for a taste of their tiger stripe or Mizzou gold ice cream.

Yogoluv

201 S. 9th St. | 573-777-9694

Yogoluv features a buffet of frozen yogurt and topping choices, and the price depends on how much your bowl of deliciousness weighs. The flavors are rotated but the basic choices of chocolate and vanilla are available along with toppings including candies, syrups, fruits, cereals, and almost anything else you’d want on your frozen yogurt.

A Few Last Tips

Easy reminders for anytime you travel!

-Always lock your vehicle. Even if you are “just going inside for a minute”. It only takes a thief a few seconds to grab your stuff!

-Make your vehicle as unattractive of a target as possible by taking all valuables inside or locking them in a trunk/out of sight. Don’t forget that things like phone chargers and computer cords are clues to a thief of what might be inside.

-Park in a well lit area if possible.

-Record the serial numbers to electronic items, firearms etc. and keep the list in a secure location such as a safety deposit box or in an email to yourself.

-Consider marking personal items of value such as iPods and cameras with a distinct marking only you know about.

-Don’t hide spare keys outside your vehicle.

June 8, 2012

If you’re looking to have a true Columbia experience, be sure to schedule your visit during a 9th Street Summerfest. Every summer, The Blue Note closes down the street outside their venue (9th Street between Walnut and Broadway) for spectacular nights of music. Everyone from Wilco to Snoop Dogg have been a part of Summerfest and this year’s lineup is equally outstanding.

June 15th: Girl Talk

A former biomedical engineer, Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show. Shows are nonstop hours of music, dancing and sweat. Tickets are only $25.

July 20th: Ana Popovic

Come see one of the world’s best female guitarists in the FREE Summerfest show! With a new album coming out in August, expect new and old favorites from this incredible artist. No ticket hassle for this show…just come out and enjoy!

August 8th: Cracker

Formed over 17 years ago, Cracker returns to Columbia for a FREE Summerfest show! Soak in their sharp-witted songs influenced by late 70s and early 80s sounds with a pop-punk aesthetic.

No matter which Summerfest you attend (Just go to all of them!), you’ll find a group of enthusiastic show goers sipping beer, spending time with friends and dancing in the street in downtown Columbia. It will give you a taste of what summer in Columbia feels like.

Summer Family Fun in Columbia

May 21, 2012

The beautiful spring and summer weather here in Columbia provides numerous opportunities for families during the warm months. We’ll be covering them as they come along…and here are a couple you won’t want to miss!

Family Fun Fests

Go ahead and mark the third Wednesday of each month on your calendar for the Columbia Parks and Recreation Family Fun Fests! Each month, a new theme transforms Flat Branch Park into a fantastic place for families! Kids can participate in games and hands-on activities, enjoy entertainers,  and benefit from new learning experiences with themes ranging from ‘Around the World’ to ‘Explore the Outdoors’. Located on the edge of downtown Columbia, Flat Branch Park is a wonderful spot to attend the festival and then head into The District for dinner!

Art in the Park

Art in the Park is the oldest and largest fine arts festival in mid-Missouri. On Saturday and Sunday, June 2nd and 3rd, Stephens Lake Park will be home to over 100 visual artists from across the country. Mom and Dad can shop for pieces in a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, pottery, jewelry, fibers, sculpture, wood and glass. The kids can participate in hands-on activities, live music and come home with art of their own. Food vendors will also be on hand, so your family can enjoy an entire day immersing yourself in everything Art in the Park has to offer!

We hope you can make it out to these two fabulous family events and we’ll keep them coming all summer long. What’s your favorite Columbia summer activity?
