The Candy Factory has been a Columbia treasure for over 30 years. If you’ve never been to this charming corner shop, there’s no better season to stop by and immerse yourself. During the holiday season, The Candy Factory has something for everyone on your list.

Located at the corner of 8th and Cherry, you can’t miss The Candy Factory welcoming you in to explore. During the holidays, beautifully decorated Christmas trees adorn the entryway and table after table is piled high with every imaginable type of treat.

Fill your basket with stocking stuffers like Katys, which begin with a bed of fresh pecans, almonds or cashews drenched with a layer of the Candy Factory’s mouth-watering secret recipe caramel, and finally topped by a pool of pure milk, dark or white chocolate. The Candy Factory also offers an array of chocolate covered goodies ranging from peanuts to cookies to potato chips. For true chocolate lovers, gift them with the Ultimate Chocolate Pizza. Rich, pure chocolate with fresh cashews, almonds, pecans, Brazil nuts, walnuts, raisins, and marshmallows creates an extraordinary deep dish. It’s then topped it with even more fresh whole nuts and cherries and drizzled with a white chocolate finale.

For those fancy folks in your life, The Candy Factory now offers artisan chocolates, which combine delicious chocolate with beautiful art. You can also please those old-fashioned candy lovers with everything from jelly beans to candy buttons. The Candy Factory also has other gift items including stuffed toys, wine stoppers, ornaments and more to add a little something special to your holiday.

While you’re there, be sure to ask if you can go upstairs and view The Candy Factory kitchen. The adorably decorated hallway gives visitors a peek into how the candy is made, making it a must see for all ages.

This holiday season, experience a little magic (and a big sugar high) with a visit to The Candy Factory. We’re sure you won’t want your first visit to be your last!

Uniquely Columbia: Ragtag Cinema and Uprise Bakery

May 31, 2012

When visiting Columbia, could we interest you in…

-An independent film enjoyed on a comfy couch?

-A cold microbrew?

-A delicious Reuben sandwich made with fresh-baked bread, house-made sauerkraut, house-made dressing and corned beef, and melted cheese?

-A place to relax, drink some coffee and check your email?

-Beautiful local art displayed for patrons to enjoy?

What if we told you that all of the above is an option? It’s true! Here in Columbia all you need to do is make your way to…

Ragtag Cinema and Uprise Bakery

Ta-da!

This local treasure in downtown Columbia is a favorite hangout for everyone from college students cramming for a final to retirees enjoying a documentary. With three businesses (Ragtag Cinema, Uprise Bakery and 9th Street Video) all housed in one complex, this place is always bustling!

With a diverse schedule of independent films, documentaries and series of shorts, Ragtag Cinema has established itself as Columbia’s arthouse theater. Two theater spaces allow Ragtag to show Oscar nominated shorts in one room and a football documentary in the other. Ragtag also hosts a variety of other events each year including concerts, trivia nights and, most notably, serves as the home base for the True/False Film Festival. Check out the calendar to find out what’s playing this weekend.

As if an amazing, one-of-a-kind theater wasn’t enough, Uprise Bakery is ready for you to eat (and drink!) through your film. Everything at Uprise is made from scratch with the best (often local) ingredients. Start your day at Uprise with coffee and a delicious homemade pastry, then come back for a sandwich and a beer during your movie. And yes, you can take that beer and sandwich into the theater with you!

So put it on your to-do list when you come to Columbia, to at least make a stop by Ragtag and Uprise. We’re confident this Uniquely Columbia spot will fast become one of your favorites too.

Perfect Patios…Outdoor Dining in Columbia

March 28, 2012

One of the very best things about visiting Columbia is all of the amazing dining choices. Of course, sometimes it’s too tough to choose just a few places during your time here!

Now that spring has arrived (a little early even), patios are popular spots to enjoy some of Columbia’s finest food in the great outdoors. For a super comprehensive list of outdoor dining in Columbia, check out Vox Magazine’s list here or pick from some of our favorites…

Uniquely Columbia

If you’re the type of traveler who likes to go where the locals go, you can’t miss Flat Branch Pub & Brewing in The District. This Columbia favorite has tasty food, delicious microbrews on tap and a beautiful outdoor space filled with plants and just enough shade to enjoy on even the hottest days.

An afternoon on Flat Branch's patio should always include one of its fantastic beers.

Also in The District, Bleu has been a local hotspot since its opening a few years ago. Now the restaurant is relocating to a new larger space once occupied by Boone Tavern. The new location will also come with a huge patio! What better place to sit and enjoy one of Bleu’s trademark rosemary lemonades.

Nestled in the south part of Columbia, Sophia’s offers Southern European influenced cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. With a fantastic tapas menu and extensive wine list, Sophia’s outdoor space is perfect for unwinding after a long day of shopping or sightseeing.

Columbia Casual

If catching the game and sipping on an ice-cold beverage is more your speed, there are plenty of patios to pick from. The District is bordered by three college campuses, so there’s always an open seat for a casual outdoor experience. Pull up a chair on The Heidelberg’s or Harpo’s rooftop patios and take in the view or keep it on the ground at Willie’s or Bengal’s.

The rooftop patio at The Heidelberg.

Just a Couple More…

After a delicious meal, what you really need is ice cream, right? Of course. Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream makes small batches of amazing ice cream in a variety of incredible flavors (honey lavender, anyone?). Grab a cone, have a seat outside and take in sights of downtown Columbia.

An ice cream shop with some of the most unique art ever? Yes, please!

If a post-dinner movie is more your style, take a stroll over to Ragtag Cinema, Columbia’s independent movie theater. Enjoy a drink on the patio before you enjoy your film and don’t forget to sample Uprise Bakery’s delicious offering.

So if the outdoors are your thing in that you enjoy a nice afternoon or evening on a patio, check out all of these spots…you’ll have to decide on your favorite for yourself!
